What were our goals?

Through this project, we aimed to add functionality and aesthetic appeal in some parts. It was essential to create something that would withstand the New England weather while maintaining a picture-worthy look.

Materials Used

We took time to ensure our material selection was best suited to the location we were working in. Due to its large scale, taking as much time as possible to ensure we had the best choices was critical for this project. Below is a short list of some of the materials we used; we left some out to keep it concise.

  • Veneer – blend of grey to beige color scale
  • Belgian Blocks – pink, black, and white with black speckles
  • Type 2 Cement – most common for masonry applications
  • Veneer Mortar – ensures strong seal between wall a veneer stones to avoid water penetration
  • Wire Mesh – thick and thin sizes were used for concrete stability under Belgian blocks and adhering veneer

Veneer Stone Siding

Installing veneer stone is a fairly straight forward process, however requires an extra step when going over a material that you can’t rough up before hand. We take chicken wire that’s screwed in across the entire surface, which is then covered by a thin layer of textured veneer mortar. Piece by piece, we individually place every stone, making sure it flows across the entire wall smoothly.

Belgian Block Pull-Offs

Although we call it a pull-off, the process resembles a Belgian block driveway. It starts with excavating and grading the site to create enough room for base material and a concrete layer and to leave room to line the blocks up with the lawn. After we set the base layer, we lay wire mesh to strengthen the concrete as we install the blocks. We used a mix of black and white blocks for this job, with pink blocks against the garage edge.

Dock Entrance

To create this small stone walkway, we started much like we would with a retaining wall. Large stones served as the base, with plenty of concrete to keep everything tight. The extra veneer was placed around the edges to dress it up, with large recycled bluestone slabs as the central walking stones.

The homeowner and we at General Masonry are thrilled with the final products. We managed to turn blank slates into works of art that’ll last for years. Although seemingly simple jobs, they completely altered the outdoor space’s appearance, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who sees them!
