A deep dive into our work as masonry contractors at the Audubon Center Bent of the River in Southbury, CT
We’re excited and proud to share our work as masonry contractors at the Bent of the River Audubon Society in Southbury, CT! Utilizing recycled materials, we constructed stunning retaining walls and a charming bluestone patio. Among the stonework, we also added stone veneer to the existing wall, finishing what already existed.

Planning
The planning stage of this project was especially meaningful to us. Recognizing the Audubon Society’s vital role in conservation, we aimed to honor it to the best of our ability. We decided to reuse the stones of the existing wall and leftover bluestone for the patio. Most of the new material came from the veneer, which blended seamlessly with what already existed.
Preparation
Despite what most may think, the preparation phase is often the most time-consuming and critical. Before even considering installing stone, we had to ensure proper drainage and grading to create a long-lasting project. We installed a network of green pipes connecting to a concrete catch basin to redirect water and avoid pooling.
Natural Stone Veneer
After splitting into teams, we decided adding the veneer stone would be a good early project. We attached wire mesh to the wall with a layer of mortar to create a base for the veneer. Piece by piece, we carefully attached each veneer stone with a specific mortar to ensure a strong, lasting hold.
Although adding to an existing project may seem daunting, our team of professionals can create a seamless design. With enough time and focus, they created something truly eye-catching.

Bluestone Patio
One of our favorite projects as masonry contractors is recycling old stones. Bluestone, especially when aged, has a certain rustic quality that worked perfectly in the conservation society setting. After proper grading and drainage, installing the patio was a simple process that produced a stunning result.
One thing to watch out for when using old bluestone is a process called “flaking.” Flaking is a result of weathering, moisture infiltration, and freeze-thaw cycles. Thin, page-like sheets easily crumble from the stone because sedimentary stones, like bluestone, form in layers.

Stone Retaining Wall
The two sets of retaining walls were by far the most time-consuming project. The Audubon Society requested that we reuse existing stones from a deteriorating wall, which we happily complied with. Of course, to complete the project, we had to bring in a fair amount of rocks from outside sources, but the result was beautiful!
We built two retaining walls at different levels to leave a walking area for visitors and volunteers. The various levels add visual appeal to the project, making it eye-catching from all angles!

Conclusion
Working with the Audubon Society in Southbury was an absolute blast. With a great staff and gorgeous landscape, we’re happy we could contribute to the setting.
